Steeped in history

Like Grimsby itself, The Cooperage presents the perfect opportunity for modern, urban living in an environment which hails back to a bygone era. The town retains its maritime traditions through the Dock Tower and the Fishing Heritage Centre, and The Cooperage stands as a monument to another great industry as the only surviving remnant of Grimsby’s brewery heritage. The Cooperage was built in 1901 and made barrels for the nearby Tower Brewery, which was operated by Hewitt Brothers. Many years later the brewery was taken over by Bass Charrington but the brewing stopped in the late 1960s and in 1980 it closed as a distribution depot. Proposed schemes since then have included a pub, an art gallery and demolition for a car park but thankfully none progressed, leaving the way clear for an authentic, red-brick restoration steeped in style and character and faithful to the original building.
